Karachi students showcase footstep energy harvesting technology
Karachi: Female students in Karachi have demonstrated Pakistan’s first practical footstep-powered electricity generation system, showing how electrical energy can be produced simply by walking. The innovative technology has the potential to generate electricity by installing special floor tiles in schools, colleges, railway stations, shopping malls, walking tracks, and other public places, providing an affordable source of clean energy.
The project was showcased at the Aligarh Institute of Technology Project Exhibition 2026 by first-year students of the CIT Department, Fadeela Khurram and Lubaina Syed, under the supervision of Shahida Muqeem.
Speaking to the media during the exhibition, student Fadeela Khurram explained that instead of relying on solar panels, this technology generates electricity through pressure created by footsteps. She said that unlike solar energy, the system does not depend on sunlight and can operate day and night.
She further explained that if these energy-generating tiles are installed in shopping malls, parks, walking tracks, speed breakers, schools, colleges, railway stations, and other high-footfall public locations, they could generate thousands of units of electricity every day.
Discussing the project’s cost, Fadeela said that the prototype currently costs approximately Rs. 5,000 per square foot. However, if manufactured on a commercial scale, the production cost could be reduced significantly, making the technology much more affordable.
She added that widespread installation of the system in educational institutions and public spaces could provide an economical source of electricity 24 hours a day, offering a sustainable solution to Pakistan’s growing energy needs.
